Finding the Right Therapist

Research suggests there are significant differences between the effectiveness of psychotherapists, with differences (in the effectiveness or positive outcomes achieved) between therapists being much larger (e.g., 6 to 9 times larger) than differences between brands of therapy (e.g., CBT vs PDT vs ACT). Thus, it is generally more important to find the right therapist than the right form of therapy.

Aside from finding practitioners that are more competent in general, it is also crucial to find one who is a good-fit to your needs. Within reason (e.g., after sufficiently persisting with a therapist and trying to adjust how to better work together), people should not be afraid to change psychologists to get the most out of their sessions.
