For me, becoming a psychologist was a matter of coming full-circle. I began studying psychology in 2003, worked as a counsellor for 3 years and then completed a Masters in International Public Health. This helped me to understand the societal, cultural and systemic issues that underpin both physical and mental health, and led me to work in the public health system in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for four years. After returning to Australia, I also returned to my psychology studies, completing my Masters in Clinical Psychology in 2020.
Having such varied life experiences myself has helped me to appreciate the uniqueness of each individual client, their histories, beliefs and desires. Research tells us that the most significant factor contributing to the success of therapy is the relationship between the two people in the room. As such, I place immense value on creating a safe and comfortable space for you to share your fears, desires, and everything in between.
While predominantly trained in the Cognitive-Behavioural approach, I have been powerfully influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and seeing the benefits it can have for clients. Many of its central tenets hail back to stoic philosophers from thousands of years ago; essentially, it boils down to finding the purpose and meaning in our own lives, taking small actions that move us towards our values, whilst using mindfulness-based skills to manage our painful thoughts and feelings. In addition to ACT, I also often bring in elements of other Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), as well as attachment-oriented approaches. All of my work is client-centred and strengths-based, understanding that you are the expert in your own life, and that therapy is the vehicle through which you may learn skills that help drive positive change.

Rachel has worked with people from diverse backgrounds, experiences and cultures, both within the public and private systems. For a number of years she worked as a counsellor for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, in the areas of complex trauma and workplace mental health. This is where she developed a passion for supporting employee wellbeing, and especially working with those who are exposed to traumatic material/content in the course of their employment. She has also completed and published research on Death Anxiety, and in the field of child ADHD.
